Marajó island: how to get there?

The Marajó is located in the state of Pará in the Northern region of Brazil. With approx. 40.000 km2 its the biggest fluvial island on the world. Even bigger than Switzerland, Netherlands and Belgium.

"This island is a piece of Rain forest in the middle of the Amazon river."

To explore the beauties of the Marajó Island we had to wake up early and take the ferry from Belém at the docks at 6am.

The 3 hours journey to harbor in the city Camará, on the Marajó island, costed 21,72R$ (7,50€)

After reaching the harbor in Camará we got a bus to the capital of the island, Soure.

We were recommended to take the bus line from Edgar, a nice guy, who book a pousada (hostel) for us during the journey. From Camará to Soure takes 1 hour with the bus and costs 12,00R$ (approx. 4€).

And crossing the river Paracauari between Salvaterra and Soure.

It was a real adventure to reach the island in the jungle, or is it, the jungle on the island?

Discovering the island Cotijuba

Following a suggestion of our guide we decided to explore one of the islands in the Marajó bay: Cotijuba. Famous for its nature and beaches.

We first headed to Icoarací, a northern district of Belém, with the bus and fr there to Cotijuba with the ferry.

In the island we spent some time, getting about the history of the island, meeting the locals and appreciating the nature.

Edilson, our guide, took us to the nicest beach on the island, "vai-quem-quer" (go-those-who-want). A sweet water beach in the Marajó bay.

The way back to the harbor in such a "public transport" was so much fun.

Also for our new friends Stavi and Kagi.

Oh! And the time schedule! Pretty much Brazilian. Lol!

Having lessons in the jungle

Here we are, making new friends and having geography and history lessons on a boat on the way to the rain forest in Pará, more exactly in the surroundings of Belém.

Getting to know about plants, fruits, rivers, legends and about the people.

Pick up cacau and try it! Yes! From the seed of this fruit is made chocolate.

Learning to open a Pará nut and ...

... to climb an Açaí tree with our "70 years old" host in the jungle.

Here I am showing my skills on climbing Acai palm trees. Success!

Getting in touch with the local fauna...

...and flora, under the shade of the 35m hight Sumaúma (Sequoia). Still a baby!

One lesson couldn't miss in the rain forest: how to extract latex from a Seringueira (rubber tree).

Awesome day in the rain forest with a great guide, Edilson, and the new friends, Stavi and Kaji.

That's what traveling is supposed to be about.

Soon in Brazil again!

Only two more weeks and I'll be landing in Brazil with my friends Anja, Roman and Frauke.

We have planed a great route in the country visiting my family, old friends and discovering new parts of this amazing country.

On the plan is to visit my dear Veronica in Rio de Janeiro and enjoy the "cidade maravilhosa" (wonderful city). From Rio we head to Salvador, the first capital of the country, where my dear friends André, Vinicius and Leandro will be waiting for us. After Salvador we meet my family in the middle north, in Maranhao and go to explore the "lencois maranhenses" and refresh in the lagoons in the middle of sand dunes.

Our last stop is the city Belém, capital of the state Pará in the rain forest. Let's see if we manage to get that three days long boot ride along the Amazon river. Adventure!!
